The perfect fit

As I posted earlier I decided to take sewing classes. After having some problems with ready made patterns I decided to make my own. The skirt pattern I drew had no problems. Things were different with the pant pattern I had drawn. Things needed to be altered. Little did I know what was to come. I learned later that getting the fit just right with a pant pattern is one of the most difficult things to do. But as I had already started I did not want to give up. I think I am almost there with the pant but it has certainly tested my patience and determination. The whole experience has up until now been a massive learning curve. I am now working on my third muslin not counting the other two I made because I had made a mistake. So five muslins in total. I hope this one is the last muslin but I am not completely sure. When I am done with this I will be so happy to move on to hopefully something not so complicated.
I will keep you posted and of course post a picture of how the pant as turned out.

pushing through

Nice words aren't enough so to put my words into action I decided to take sewing classes. Yes, I have already had two classes and finished, or almost finished, my first project. Unfortunately for me I decided to use a flimsy jersey and oh boy, it wasn't easy I can tell you. I have learned though that when working with jersey, spray starch is your best friend and so are pins, lots of pins. Because jersey has a tendency to move all over the place and puckers are very easily created. I have never in my life sewn and re-sewn seams so many times in one garment. But remembering my very own words I pushed through. And as my husband reminded me, it is o.k. because I am still learning after all and it is my first time working with jersey so I can be forgiven for not doing it perfectly the first time around. I don't think I did to bad not having sewn a garment in over 12 years if not more.
A long long time ago I was a student at a fashion college but I never REALLY learned to sew. I was a design student and we did get sewing classes because as designers we needed to know how a garment is constructed but I never really learned in depth.
In the following years I did make some basic clothes for myself and when my children where born I made some clothes for them but it was all pretty basic.
So now I am learning more in depth and hopefully in the not so far future I will be a lot more comfortable sewing my own clothes. It saves a lot of money if you are willing to put in the work and you will have some nice clothes to show for it. Well that is what I hope anyway.

I also finished my little black bag and I am really happy with it.

I will explain all about it in a new post.
Until then and HAVE FUN in the meantime.

A new year

Happy new year to everyone!  I hope you all had a lovely december month.
And now it is 2018 and we all get a fresh start. I am always careful with new years resolutions. Some years I don't have any, some years I do. Like now.
As I turned 50 last summer I have now decided I am to old to put myself down. I know, it is sad but like many women I do tend to do that. Funny enough men are much more positive about themselves and what they have done. Just watch Jamie Oliver a few times and you see what I mean : ) Love him by the way!
I have a nasty habit of pointing out all the not so perfect in my work to other people. Why? So they don't see it first I guess. But I do believe that you teach people how they should treat you and if I talk in a negative way about my work then why should they think about it in a positive way. Think about it. If Jamie Oliver would do that I don't think he would be as succesful as he is now. So I will be kinder to myself from now on, promiss.
Secondly, I will ask more of myself. I know that it sound like a contradiction. Being kinder to myself and at the same time ask more of myself but it isn't and I will tell you why.
Through out my life I have had a nasty habit of taking the easy route because I was always afraid that I wasn't able to do the more difficult things. We all have that sometimes. Thinking; Oh I would love to be able to do that, but it seems difficult. I am sure I can't. At times that is o.k. until you make a habit of it. Then you are under estimating yourself.
So that is stopping right now. I will try more because it is o.k. to not get it right the first time around or the second or the third. We need to make mistakes to learn. It is not o.k. to not even try. Not because you do not want to but because you are to scared to.
Well that was the heavy stuff out of the way. Now I will show you what I did yesterday.

I made myself a fabric box and yes, I really like how it turned out! I have watched a lot of Debbie Shore you tube videos. She has a ton of nice project and it have really inspired me to try some of them. And the nice thing is that you can make them your own.
I hope that this will be a good year for all of us! See you next time and remember: have fun!

Finally finished

It has been a while I know. First there was that flu virus. I didn't do much then and it took me two weeks to get better and another to get up to speed again. I did manage to finish the jeans blanket for my son right before I really got sick so that was good.
But now I am busy again dying fabric, journaling from time to time and knitting even! I also finally finished a blanket that has been ten years in the making!

It is made of old jeans, a woolen jacket and other leftover fabrics. I added a lot of embroidery too. I am glad that it is finally done and ready to use. Way better than it laying around in a krate or drawer.

Yesterday I played with my new shiva paint sticks and spray paints.

I had lot of fun with that and I really like the result.

A few weeks ago my husband brought home six bags of textile. My mother in law has moved into a nursing home and now her house has to be cleared out. As my mother in law isn't using the textiles anymore I asked if I could have them. But what do you do with a whole bunch of old sheets? Well I decided to dye them so I can quilt with it later. And as I need to dye a whole lot I decided that this is an excellant chance to write down how much dye I use and what the result is so I can perhaps repeat it at a later date rather then just winging it and see what comes of it. Don't get me wrong, that is nice too from time to time but sometimes you want a certain colour and at those time it is nice to be able to look it up.

So that experiment is still going and I will post about it later.
There was also a bag full of yarns of wool and blends and so I decided to do some knitting in the evenings. Nothing fancy though!

You can see that I am keeping myself busy. I see you next time and don't forget to have fun.

Upcycling

Hello everyone! It is a beautiful day and the sun is shining bright and I don't know about all of you but a beautiful day does wonders for my mood. I have been cleaning and clearing out and I haven't even hated it LOL.
So here is what I have been up to.

This weekend I gave myself the challenge to make blocks out of all kinds of very small leftover pieces. I had a whole shoebox full of those and I didn't want to throw it in the bin because I think it is wasteful and well I can't throw textile out that I know I can still use. The box had mainly green and blue pieces. Because I wanted to keep the blocks mainly one colour scheme I chose the green pieces to work with first.

I started by piecing two small pieces together and then looked in my shoebox to see what fitted that now new sewn piece. It is really a puzzle. I also didn't want to cut into the pieces more then I really neede to. The task was to use the pieces and have as little waste as possible. (Of course I did need to straighten things up as I went)

I have now made three blocks. You can see the first two in the picture. I have no idea what I am going to do with it but I am sure that time will tell. I still have some green fabric left so I am not done yet and I still have the blue ones to use. Imagine if I have thrown that shoebox out! It is a lot of fabric even if it all cut into small pieces!

I have also finished the jeans blanket. Well almost, because I still need to add the binding. I must say that I have had a bit of trouble with the blanket because it was pretty hard to straighten the whole thing. It must be because I used some stretchy fabric and of course there are no real straight edges that I could use as a guide.  But I did manage to get it sort of straight and that is good enough for me.
I decided on zigzag stitches to fuse the top to my fleece back. It still took me a few afternoons to get it done but hey it is done and it is (almost) ready to be used.

Well that is what I have been up to. I hope you all have a lovely day and thanks for stopping by!

Some painting

We have had some lovely weather this weekend and so I was outside a lot.
But somehow I did have some time left to experiment with some painting and sew my jeans blanket top.

Has a small child I loved to finger paint. As a fifty year old I now rediscover the joy of playing with paint. I really enjoy it and I plan to do more of it. I am watching a lot of youtube films about painting and painters mostly about abstract painting because it offers a lot of freedom to just do what you want to do. I have already learned a lot techniques and I am slowly getting more courage to just try and see where it ends. For now it is just practice on recycled pieces of paper.

As for the jeans blanket I am now thinking about how to finish it. I will get there. And then I need to straighten the edges, not my favorite part :(

See you next time. Have fun!!

Tablet case

Time flies when you're having fun!
